Graduates of this program will gain the prerequisites needed to apply to write the Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) and Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification exam.
In addition to MLPAO certification, graduates are also eligible to challenge the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) National Certification Exam, subject to completion of all requirements. You'll learn how to evaluate the technical validity of bodily specimens, and how to perform laboratory investigations related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. The demand for qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians is high and your work will feel meaningful as an important member of a healthcare team.
The Medical Laboratory field has physical, sensory, psychological, and emotional demands. MLA/T students must be able to stand for long periods, perform repetitive hand movements, lift or handle equipment and specimens, draw blood, and maintain strict infection control while using laboratory instruments and analyzers. They must also handle biological samples, manage potential exposure to biohazards, work accurately under time pressure, maintain focus for extended periods, cope with stress in fast-paced environments, and communicate professionally and compassionately with patients and healthcare teams.

The MLPAO is the certifying body for Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians (MLA/Ts) in the province of Ontario. The association's certification program validates that an individual has attained a recognized level of standards and training through MLPAO approved educational institutions. With the use of an examination process, the association has granted MLA/T certification to over 25,000 individuals.
